‘Church attacks politically motivated’

H.T. Sangliana:

Bangalore, Jan 7 : Police should improve its intelligence gathering
The year 2009 was marred by a rash of attacks on churches. H.T. Sangliana Vice-chairperson of National Commission for Minorities pointed out that miscreants vandalised at least 50 churches and prayer halls across the State this year.

He said: “All these attacks were politically motivated. All Christians in the State hope that the Government will take action against the anti-social elements, which will be a big test. The police should improve its intelligence to prevent such activities and deploy more personnel in vulnerable areas.

“To nab the accused in the church attacks, the Government should announce Rs. 1 crore as reward for those providing information about the accused. Churches should be assisted to install CCTV surveillance cameras, burglar alarms and other safety equipment.

“In Karnataka, everybody feels there is no protection for minorities. Fortunately nothing untoward was reported during the Christmas celebrations this year.”
