Dimapur, Dec 28 : Addressing the 8th annual session of Highway Area Students Union (HASSU), Congress MLA, Hewoto Awomi challenged students to fulfill their commitments to become “social mediators.”

Focusing on the Union’s annual session theme “student as a social mediator,” Hewoto questioned the students if they were ready to become real social mediators or if they were mere rhetoric; suggesting they lift the face of society from destruction and pave way for other people to follow suit.

The MLA said although Naga youths are more aware of the effects of deviant behavior there are still loopholes which has stunted their growth. He told students not to think of their degrees as achievements; rather give up laziness, greed and selfishness to fulfill their commitment towards society and self. “Do not be stubborn; let there be no ‘buts’ and then you can play a vital role in shaping your future and the society.” Pointing out that students can be agents of change; Hewoto said students need to be more responsible citizens and work united for the success of their future.
Hewoto also dwelt on the Naga youths’ emerging craze for clothes, luxuries and stylish products and said it is detrimental to society.

“Today we cannot differentiate between rich and poor on the streets. Everyone can afford to look stylish…but at home are we really the kind of person we try to be?” Hewoto asked, while also advising them not to see that as their achievement.

He advised students not to compromise on their studies and encouraged them to shoulder the responsibility of society, and also expressed hope in the future of Naga society in general and the Sumi community in particular.

Hewoto while declaring the meet open also gave a sum pf Rs. 3,000 each to eleven units of HASSU, Rs. 20,000 to the Sugarmill village for hosting the event and Rs. 30,000 to HASSU.
