Nagaland 2008 crime rate ‘decreases’

Kohima : While Nagaland state witnessed an overall decline in the crime index during the year 2008, anti-social activities still persist with kidnapping, extortion and hooliganism still going strong in the state.

According to reports, the official crime statistics of 2008 up to November 30 indicated that the overall crime rate declined with a total 852 registered cases during the period as against 1127 cases registered in the previous year.

However, there has been an increase in the crimes of kidnapping, abductions, extortions, riots, theft and crimes under the arms act.

Altogether, 35 cases of abduction and kidnapping against 19 cases in the previous year, 65 cases of extortions against 59, 12 cases of riots against 8, 152 cases of theft against 34 and 82 cases under Arms Act against 33 were registered during the period.

Interestingly, no case was registered under attempt to murder, dacoity, and counterfeit, Excise Act, Foreigners Act and Passport Act during the period.
