Imphal, Jan 10 : People of Manipur today paid homage to Meidingu Gambhir Singh and Nara Singh who played major roles in winning back the lost independence of the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur from the hands of the Awas (Burmese) .
Participating in the observance of the 175th death anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh held at the memorial of the former King located at Langthabal here today, Ministers, Government officials and leaders of various social organisations led the people in offering floral tributes to Meidingu Gambhir Sigh and Nara Singh.

Afterward, the formal observance function attended by Education Minister L Jayantakumar, MLA of Langthabal Assembly Constituency O Joy and PDA Chairman D Kh Loken as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively commenced with the opening song rendered jointly by students and teachers of Shri Shri Balmukunda Dev Government Music College.
Director of Mutua Museum Mutua Bahadur also delivered a lecture on the topic of 'Development of Langthabal Palace during the reign of Maharaj Bhagyachandra and Gambhir Singh in Manipur' at the occasion.
In his address as guest of honour of the function, PDA Chairman Dr Kh Loken observed that the present Manipur has evolved as a State as a result of the various events that took place in the past.
So along with understand the history of Manipur, the present generation should give up their divisional character and work together for taking forward the State on the path of development and peace.
In order to develop the memorial site of Maharaj Gambhir Singh the State Government has also deposited the first instalment of the fund with the PDA and the necessary developmental works would be taken up very soon, he informed the gathering.
All those who spoke at the occasion also recalled the contribution made by Gambhir Singh in Manipuri society and underlined the need for following the footsteps of such an illustrious King by the present generation.
