Taxi drivers and owners stage protest rally

Imphal, Jan 9 : Owners and drivers of the Tata Magic passenger mini vans and diesel autorickshaws plying along the stretch of National Highway 38 between Imphal and Lilong took out a protest rally in their respective vehicles here today.

Today's protest rally was taken out under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee of five different Associations of the owners/drivers of the Tata Magic Van and Diesel Autorickshaws plying along the route in the backdrop of the hijacking of a Tata Magic van (MN-01W/1388) at gunpoint by two unidentified armed persons from a spot along Chingamakhong-Heirangoithong Road at around 4 pm on January 3 and another diesel autorickshaw (MN-01Q/9641) some days earlier.

Though cases have been registered and investigation started by the Singjamei police station, whereabouts of the hijacked vehicles have not been traced till now.

Starting from Lilong of Thoubal district, the protest rally was proceeding towards Imphal when the police stopped the rallyists at Kakwa Naorem Leikai area.

After a brief confrontation between the police and the transporters, an agreement was arrived at on whose basis the protest rally was allowed to proceed from Pishumthong side.

After crossing Pishumthong, the rallyists walked along Mayai Lambi and came till Khuyathong.

From there, they again went ahead and after crossing Minuthong snaked through some parts of Imphal East district before coming out at Singjamei bridge and proceeding back to Lilong.

Prior to taking out the protest rally, a meeting was held Lilong Bazar and adopted various resolutions.

The JAC has also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this connection.

The demands of the JAC highlighted in the memorandum include arrest and punishment of those involved in hijacking of the Tata Magic Van and Auto rickshaw, paying adequate compensation to the owners of the hijacked vehicles, a written assurance from the side of the Chief Minister who is also in-charge of the Home to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future and standing instruction from the side of the Government for ending the insurance policy signed between the dealer MGT and the owners.

Setting January 15 as the deadline for considering these demands, the JAC has also warned of going ahead with cease work service and indefinite road block from the following the day if the Government fails to written assurance on fulfilling these demands.
