Amarjit Singh emerge U-14 champ, Premjit-Leelenjai win doubles crown | ||
Imphal, Jan. 8: Calvin Golmei today annexed the under-12 title in the 1st Winter Clay Court Tennis Tournament organised by Imphal District Tennis Association at its complex at Lamphelpat. In the final match, Golmei played brilliantly to defeat T. Bony Singh 4-1, 4-2 for the singles title. L. Amarjit Singh finished as the under-14 champion defeating a defiant Kh. Thoihanba Singh via tiebreaker. Thoihanba clinched the first set 7-6 but in the second set, Amarjit bounced back with determination to take the set 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Amarjit Singh overcame the challenge of Thoihanba by 10-5 points for the title. In the men’s doubles open event, the pair of N. Premjit Singh and Y. Leelenjai defeated Y. Romen Singh and his partner T. Brojen Singh for the title. It was another game of nerves, where both the duos gave in their best. Romen and Brojen won the first set 6-4 but the younger tandem of Premjit and Leelenjai fought back strongly in the last two sets and put up some impressive performance to overwhelm their opponents. They won the sets 7-6, 7-6 to emerge victorious. Manipur squad The All-Manipur Football Association has named a 14-member team to represent Manipur in the AIFF under-13 boys’ Football Festival, which will be held at Jamshedpur, reports our sports correspondent from Imphal. The selected players are R.K. Jolison, M. Jimi, W. Angousana, Ch. Kishan, N. Herojit, Th. Prempatar, H. Bijesh, M. Winson, Kh. Amuthoi, M. William, Ak. Anganba, P. Anupkumar, Nimso Rungsong and M. Bidyananda Singh. Besides, the association has appointed M. Surmala Chanu as the coach-cum-manager of the Manipur women’s team for the 23rd North East Sports Festival to be held in Agartala from February 4 to 7. They also appointed S. Premkanta Singh as coach for the Manipur women’s team for the Senior National Football Championship as well as for the 34th National Games in Jharkhand. |
